Pierola BIOGRAPHY OF NICHOLAS OF YOUTH POEMS

President of Peru - Nicolas de Pierola


(Arequipa 1839 - Lima, 1913) Peruvian politician who was president. The young Nicholas was ecclesiastical inclinations: he studied at the Seminary of Santo Toribio from 1853 to 1861, but left that institution in that year and married Dona Jesus de Iturbide and Villena. In 1864 he edited the newspaper El Tiempo.

In 1869, under President José Balta, was appointed finance minister. During his management contract was signed the famous Dreyfus. Exiled in Peru conspiracy for his activities, he returned to declare war with Chile. He rebelled against President Prado, who had offered a ministry, and December 21 1879 revolutionary movement elevated him to the post of supreme leader.

However, his performance as chief political and military during the Pacific War was not very successful. The battles of Miraflores and San Juan were shown a remarkable improvisation. In November 1881, Piérola was virtually forced to resign. He was arrested on April 5, 1890 and subject to military trial, but it got leak out of jail and fled the country. He returned just as an uprising deposed Cáceres president in March 1895.

Piérola government inaugurated a cycle of democratic stability that would last until 1919, on the other hand, during his tenure established the gold standard and regulated the compulsory military service. He died in Lima on June 23, 1913, his funeral was one of the most massive living memory in Peru.
