military and statesman Simon Bolivar is undoubtedly one of the greatest figures in American history. His skills as a strategist contributed decisively to achieve freedom of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Bolivia and Peru from English rule.

Born July 24, 1783 in Caracas, lost his parents at an early age. At age 16, his tutor, Simon Rodriguez, sent him to Europe, where he completed his education.

On his return he joined the patriot movement took Caracas, in 1810, and assumed an active role in political life as a member of the Patriotic Society that promoted the independence of Venezuela. This would be consolidated in 1813. Bolivar received the title of Liberator, doomed then to the supreme task of the emancipation of America. After a period

in exile, returned to the mainland in 1817 and joined the struggle for the independence of New Granada, who said after the battle of Boyacá on August 6, 1819. After this victory he proclaimed the Republic of Colombia. In September 1823 at Callao, and days later, by Congress, took charge of the final stage of liberation struggle in Peru, which ended with the triumph of Junín and Ayacucho in 1824. Months later, issued a decree for the creation of a new state, in his honor, is named Bolivia, separating the old Viceroyalty of Upper Peru. The Liberator died on December 17, 1830 in Santa Marta, Colombia.
