This weekend we have used to meet once again in our old mill and there with the justifiable excuse to try a great wine from our Ribera, specifically a cellar Horrillo, were the friends that from time to time we meeting between its old walls to speak of our things while we look forward to the arrival of good weather which always invites much more to these intimate meetings.
This time, we decided to talk about stories experienced by us or by third parties for which we had evidence of being true.
When my turn came, can not fail to remember a beloved person, very attached to me, that one day a few years ago, in a sunset and as we walked (I remember the site as if it had happened ten minutes ago) said, "Did you know when I was in prison in 1940, a Sunday ...?» that story I was so impressed that I have always remembered just as I was told to the protagonist. Some of you might even read on another blog that I had for some time. It is not the first nor will be the last that story.
happened in the prison of Burgos, shortly after the civil war finished. 1940.
Any Given Sunday of that year, are political prisoners in the prison yard, is in the morning. All are in rows, it's time to get "free" to hear the Sunday mass. A guardian jailer repeats wearily every Sunday the same question: "Whoever does not want to go to Mass than a step forward" Until that day only listened to the silence and the footsteps of all inmates walking towards the prison chapel.
But that day was exceptional and a prisoner, a militant of the CNT, and finally decided to take the step forward. Everyone gets scared, they all look with envy at the same time concerned. The guard is confused, it sends out training and tells him to stay in the yard, while ordering the other political prisoners move in formation to the church.
In everyone rushes out to go to him. They are afraid, they think they can shoot for that. Spend the night and "walk" morning does not occur, nor the next day or on Thursday or Friday or Saturday.
is Sunday again and the same question, and there are three in addition to not wanting to go to church. In total that day were four who remain in the courtyard.
week Pasa "quietly" (with the tranquility that you can think of a prison where they are common executions), but none of the "mass."
the arrival of the third Sunday. Same time, same court and the same question. This time, like a spring most give a step forward and express their desire not to go to church. Only a few inches fall in line willing to go to the religious act. At the sight distressing religious defections, the guard with the face of disbelief and amazement, demand for new training and authoritative voice says: "ALL TO MASS! UP! ". There was never no questions or releases. From this Sunday, ALL, "voluntarily" all returned on Sunday to church.
conclude, but not before, to dedicate my fond remembrance and moved to the memory of the person who told me many years later and that was the first to take the first step in front of 1,940 that Sunday in the grim Criminal Burgos. REST IN PEACE.
